In Vilnius with family, off to Spain tomorrow.

It was a bit of a culture shock coming back to Vilnius from Klaipeda. Vilnius really has that big city feel. On the day that I was visiting Trakai Castle, I found virtually every person along the way; at the shop, on the bus etc to be in a huge rush and really irritable. I was at the end of my tether when a car nearly hit me as I was walking across the pedestrian crossing, and at that point, I stopped and scowled, and stuck my finger up at them.

Anyway, aside from nearly getting hit by a car, Traikai was as beautiful as I remember it to be. It was a bit of a ghost town as I was walking through, which was kind of nice as I then got to pretend in my head that I lived in the castle.

It has been really amazing catching up with relatives that I last saw 15 years ago, we all still remember very well, the time that my Australian visited in 2000. My family here (other Rasa Kabailaite, my fathers cousin) still live in the same house as when we visited in 2000.

A very beautiful cemetery, across the road from where Rasa and her family live.

Her son, Adomas, who I am staying with, lives across the street from Rasa with his girlfriend Aiste and their friend Karolis. They are all sound engineers and work at the theater. I had to double check with Adomas, that it was him, when I met him in the old town, as when I last saw him I was 13 years old.

It was really nice, that as big kids, we could reconnect as a family again. Once I met with Adomas, Aiste and his friends in the old town, we went to a cool bar, then had burgers and came back at 1am. I get the feeling that Adomas and his friends really live 'the artist life', which is great, I am so not suited to it though as my hangovers hit hard these days.

The day after hitting the bar in the old town, I caught the bus to 'Druskininkai' a resort town in Lithuania. I was hungover at it was a 2.5 hour bumpy ride on a tiny bus with no toilet, so I'm glad that I made it there okay!

Druskininkai has that resorts town, pretentious vibe, where people fuss over you so much that it is a bit ridiculous and uncomfertable. But I really cannot complain about having a swim in a beautiful pool then alternating between the spa and the sauna. Aside from how 'resorty' the place is, I still wouldn't mid coming back another time with a few days, alternating between the ski slope and a mud bath. :)

Last night, Rasa and I went to the theater, as we received tickets from Adomas, as he works there. We saw a one person performance (the autobiography of the actor's family) who were taken to Siberia during the Russian occupation. It was very sad but beautiful, and so well received by the audience. The Actress received a standing ovation. I think people appreciate when the difficult history of a country can be told in the right way.

Today I aimed to go for a run, but it was so icey in patches, that I thought it would be best not to take the risk of rolling an ankle. This morning when I took out the bins that are situated on an icey slope, I looked like  a little old lady hiking up Everest, it took so long and was so difficult. When going for a walk instead of a run, I took a side street upon a strangers suggestion which lead me to this beautiful street of shops and restaurants. I felt like I had walked through the wardrobe in Narnia.

I went to a restaurant which sold every kind of pancake 'Blynai'. I think it might have been a chain restaurant but I am not sure. As you walk in, the waiter asks you 'English, Polish or Russian?'. Lietuviskai, prasau! I say.

This afternoon I will had afternoon tea with Rasa and her family, then dinner with my other relative Gintare, Bartas and their 4 lovely young children. It was so great to spend time with relatives that I have not seen in a very long time.

Other Rasa, Meilute, and her sons Adomas and Rockas.

With Adomas's girlfriend Aiste.

Aiste and Adomas are looking for a new apartment to live in. Those doors up above have a little hobbit room! But you need a ladder to get up there, very cute and funny.

With my relllie Gintare and her children.

Then tomorrow, I will be in Bilbao, Spain.

Trying to get excited about having to be at the airport at 415am, but Spain is the result, so I had better stop my complaining. :P

Iki,

Xo
Rasa
